Bloomberg forced to postpone its latest business launch

Bloomberg LP suffered a PR black eye this week when the company, built on a finely tuned tech chassis, postponed its newest Bloomberg Business product launch which was expected to showcase a major overhaul of its web site.

“The site just isn’t quite there yet, and we don’t want to turn it on until it’s 100% ready,” said a spokeswoman who added, “But it will be ready very soon.”

The company shook up its editorial leadership last month with the hiring of The Economist’s Editor John Micklethwait to replace Matt Winkler, who was just shy of 25 years at the helm of former Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s company.

The media and data giant had originally planned to give a press briefing on Tuesday afternoon in advance of its new Bloomberg Business launch — with Senior Executive Editor Josh Tyrangiel, Bloomberg Media CEO Justin Smith, and Chief Operating Officer Jacki Kelley on hand.

Bloomberg had even promised journalists a free lunch at the corporate HQ to showcase the launch. But on Monday the company said the briefing was going to be pushed back to a later time frame. Then came word later on Monday that the Tuesday briefing was being scrapped entirely.

Josh Topolsky, editor of Bloomberg Digital, tweeted on Monday: “Really excited about the @business launch — we’re taking a few extra days to fine tune, CANNOT wait to share it with you guys.”
No new date was set for a new briefing and launch date.
