SAN BERNARDINO >> Police officers here were honored Tuesday with the Thomson Reuters Everyday Heroes award for their work on Dec. 2.

Thomson Reuters is a technology company that provides data and records to law enforcement agencies and companies worldwide, according to the company’s website.

“What happened in this community on December 2 captured the world’s attention,” said Steve Rubley, managing director for the government business of Thomson Reuters. “From the dispatchers back in command, to the narcotics team who were on the front line that day pursuing the suspects, these brave men and women showed all of us what it means to be a hero. For that, you deserve our gratitude.”

On Dec. 2, San Bernardino County employee Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, 27, opened fire at a county training seminar being held in a meeting room at the Inland Regional Center. Fourteen people were killed and 22 others were wounded on that day. The couple died in a shootout with police hours later.

After learning who the shooters were, detectives with the San Bernardino Police Department searched their investigative databases for information.

Clear, an investigative platform for law enforcement to identify and locate individuals or organizations, was used to search data, according to a police news release.

The database returned the Redlands address and ultimately led to the suspects.

“We thank Thomson Reuters for its continued efforts in the development of this kind of software that provides a dependable database for our investigators,” Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said.

A $5,000 donation was made on behalf of the San Bernardino Police Department by Thomson Reuters, to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

“I would also like to express my gratitude for their generous donation to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund,” Burguan said. “We look forward to the continuation of this partnership and all of the ways it is sure to help enhance the safety of our public.”

The Thomson Reuters Everyday Heroes Award is an annual program that honors agencies and organizations that use Thomson Reuters products in their communities.
