Enrique Jara, a calm manager of unpredictable crises

Enrique was a gentleman, and in the sometimes competitive world of Reuters management I know of no-one who viewed him with anything other than affection and respect. I worked with him in Europe and Latin America and have many happy memories of his calm management of often unpredictable crises ranging from economic collapse to earthquakes.

We were once together in Sao Paulo where I saw a pickpocket take Enrique's wallet. As I tried to catch the thief, Enrique restrained me, saying "Bad enough to lose my money but much more embarrassing to lose my boss."

He was a loving husband to Nelly and a proud father and grandfather. He'll be missed. ■
