Jim's nocturnal dining club

I was invited to join Jim’s overnight team in 1976, driving in from Wimbledon and finding easy parking in Salisbury Square. As soon as Jim discovered I had transport he charged me with food collection. So on Fridays it was off to Soho to collect a Chinese takeaway, on Saturday it was The Shah in Drummond Street for Indian, and on Saturdays a trip to Mornington Crescent to a Greek-Cypriot cafe for Doner kebabs. On the other days, should Jim get peckish, which was invariably the case, a cafe off Fleet Street favoured by printers provided a mean toasted bacon and tomato sandwich. With Jim at the helm one never went hungry. ■
