Paul: Enthusiasms and love of life

Paul's enthusiasm and joie de vivre were constant, from his start as a beanpole thin trainee to his more rounded trencherman years. We shared adventures in Africa and Asia and, after retirement, in running journalism workshops for the Reuters Foundation, at which Paul excelled.

During one rollicking week in Beirut we ran a course on environmental journalism about which, we discovered, we knew considerably less than two Sorbonne-educated Lebanese ladies we were supposed to be instructing.

We just about emerged with honour, and celebrated with a Levantine feast washed down with arak. The next morning, despite the hangover, Paul arose early to be back in London for a meeting of the NUJ, another of his passions, in which he was active at national and local levels.

And there was the Mediterranean booze cruise.

Thanks for all the happy memories, old friend. ■
