Economist CEO to join Reuters as chief executive

Andrew Rashbass, chief executive of The Economist Group, will become chief executive, Reuters, running Thomson Reuters' news and media business from London. Reuters' New York-based president and editor-in-chief Stephen Adler will report to him.

“Andrew's track record as CEO of The Economist Group speaks for itself,” said James Smith, Thomson Reuters CEO, in a company announcement on Wednesday. “He brings to us a rare blend of commercial acumen, sensitivity to the best traditions of quality journalism and editorial integrity. And has a proven ability to build and lead great global business teams.”

Rashbass, pictured, will report directly to Smith. He said: “I am excited to be joining Reuters with its unmatched commitment to reporting with speed, accuracy, integrity and independence. As well as being, or in fact because they are, essential to Reuters journalism, these characteristics can also drive huge commercial success.”

Rashbass has worked for The Economist for 15 years in a number of roles, including managing director of Economist.com and publisher of the newspaper. He has been group chief executive since 2008. He joined The Economist in December 1997 from Associated Newspapers.

Rashbass will join Thomson Reuters in the summer. The job is a newly established role. Smith said Adler “has done a great job improving and focusing our reporting efforts and in leading the integration of our news and media businesses”.

“We are delighted that someone of Andrew’s commercial and human qualities has chosen to join our senior team,” said David Thomson, chairman of Thomson Reuters. “Our family’s commitment to news stretches back three generations. This key appointment underlines our passionate commitment to Reuters news. We are determined that Reuters news should not only fulfill its critical journalistic mission but also its potential in creating long-term value for our customers and shareholders.” ■
