Washington bureau chief leaves Reuters

Bureau chief Marilyn Thompson (photo), who only last month announced a shake-up in the Washington office, is leaving Reuters.

Americas editor Dayan Candappa told staff: “I regret to announce that Marilyn Thompson is leaving Reuters after a successful stint as Washington Bureau Chief to take up a role as deputy editor at Politico. Karey Van Hall will be acting bureau chief as we move swiftly to find a successor.“ Van Hall is deputy bureau chief.

Candappa said Thompson, a published author and award-winning journalist with three decades of experience, “leaves big shoes to fill”.

“I will miss Marilyn's instinctive feel for the Washington story and the kind of people who can tell it well. She led the bureau through one major transition and, late last year, laid out a plan to make it work even better. I will work closely with Karey and the team in Washington to push through the changes she proposed. Our goal remains making Reuters even more of a must-read on Washington stories.”

Thompson has been Washington bureau chief since 2012. She described the latest reorganisation as "part of our effort to add depth and speed to the file". ■
