Thomson Reuters declines power deal for Hauppauge

Thomson Reuters has turned down an allocation of low-cost electricity from a New York state scheme that would have reduced operating costs at its Hauppauge data centre on Long Island.

The power subsidy was part of a state aid package supporting a proposed $5 million revamp of the facility, including upgrades to cooling systems and generators.

The company had promised to maintain a workforce of 125 at Hauppauge in return for the aid. It currently employs about 100 people there, down from 550 a decade ago.

“This was not the most attractive opportunity for us to run our business operations most efficiently,” company spokesman John Russell told Newsday.

Thomson Reuters representatives told the Newspaper Guild of New York last May that Hauppauge, opened in 1982, would be phased out with a "moving target" date of 2018. ■
