Obituary: Arnold Amber

Arnold Amber (photo), a Reuters correspondent in Africa and Europe for nearly six years in the 1960s, died after a short battle with cancer in his native Canada on Monday aged 77.

Much of his career after working for Reuters from April 1963 to January 1969 was spent at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation where he became an executive producer in the television news department.

A passionate advocate of social justice, Amber was a former president of Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, which supports media rights and free expression in Canada and around the world.

In 2014 he received a lifetime achievement award from the Canadian Media Guild. He served as Canadian director of The NewsGuild (formerly The Newspaper Guild) of New York. ■
