Obituary: Patrick Hamilton

Patrick Hamilton (photo), a US Vietnam War combat veteran who covered the first Gulf War, Desert Storm in Iraq, for Reuters, died at home in San Antonio, Texas on 13 August of lung cancer. He was 74.

Hamilton joined Reuters from the Associated Press in 1985 as chief photographer for Mexico and Central America, leaving in 1994 to become a photo editor at a Texas newspaper.

Colleagues remembered him as a gentle professional who was cool under pressure. ■

Paul Julius Reuter started his first news and stock price information service between Brussels and Aachen, Germany on 28 April 1850. He used 45 trained carrier pigeons provided by an Aachen brewer, baker and pigeon breeder.
