Spot the correspondent - Moscow Conference 1988

Bob Evans has found this photo of the 1988 Chief Correspondents and Editors conference held in Moscow, when he was Chief Representative in the Soviet Union. It was a historic meeting for Reuters, coinciding with the giant changes of Perestroika led by Mikhail Gorbachev. Mark Wood and Andy Nibley had recently taken over at the head of Editorial and there was an air of optimism about a new era like that in Moscow. Wood and Nibley were dubbed "The Glasnost Twins". Wags suggested pictures of "Pagelovich" were being taken down in Reuters offices and replaced by those of "Woodski". So the choice of venue was not coincidental. Bob says a meeting of this kind could never have taken place under Gorbachev's predecessors and the keynote address was given by Gennady Gerasimov, the foreign ministry spokesman.  ■
