The Andrew picture made me queasy

It is surely impossible to deny the initiative and skill of the photographer who captured that Scream-like image of the ex-prince after his police interrogation, which won Reuter credits around the world.

But like Neil Winton, I felt more than queasy about the morality of publishing it, and of celebrating its success.

As Neil says, Andrew M-W has been, deservedly, deeply humiliated in public and the media over the past few weeks.

But, like Neil, I question the editorial decision to use this photo. Here was a man, clearly in severe mental distress, photographed in what he could have assumed to be a private space. Even if at that moment his mind could not have been on anything but the horror of the personal disaster he had brought on himsel

Obviously the publication of the dozens of other photos of him in various sleazy situations was legitimate and, as they say, in the public interest.

But, again as Neil says, this one added nothing new worth knowing.

It actually made me, a Republican, feel quite sorry for him. ■
