Reuters Hauppauge data centre closure 'by 2018'

Thomson Reuters is to phase out the Reuters technical centre opened at Hauppauge on Long Island in 1982 with a "moving target" date of 2018.

Company representatives gave the news to the Newspaper Guild of New York at a contract bargaining session with the union on Thursday.

Asked whether that meant staff would be laid off, global commodities editor Jonathan Leff said: “That’s what we’re discussing,” the Guild reported. He added that “in light of this we will revise our proposal regarding benefits for Hauppauge”.

The union said the main topic of discussion on Thursday was its proposal to add an Adjustable Pension Plan (APP) to members’ retirement benefit packages. APPs guarantee monthly retirement income using a conservative investment approach and adjusting the benefit rate annually to keep it fully funded. ■
