Did Hadley Wood become Green End?
Thursday 20 August 2015
I wonder if the Reuter radio station at Hadley End mentioned by Roger Gough (How I joined Reuters 70 years ago) was an earlier name for the Green End complex, also to the north of London, in Hertfordshire if I remember correctly?
I was sent to Green End in September 1962 for a test of my Russian after returning from a post-graduate year in Moscow and applying to join Reuters. I spent two days and nights monitoring Moscow Radio under the supervision of a fascinating group of people, mainly East European exiles but also including Archie Green, a lanky Balkan veteran with a long domed - and largely bald - head who had been The Times correspondent in the region before the Second World War. I don't think much has been written about Green End (or Hadley Wood), but it played an important part in Reuters history at a time when the company competed with BBC monitoring in Reading. Any other vets remember going there? ■
