Jack Hartzman was one of the best desk persons ever, without a doubt. I found him a kindred spirit in more ways than one when I moved to the World Desk from the Middle East/Asia desk many, many years ago. His knowledge and advice helped not only me but, I’m certain, countless others.
He was outspoken, very much more often right than not, and that undoubtedly was why the powers never elevated him to the higher ranks. But Jack probably preferred being in the heart of the news operation rather than some back office.
I still remember times in the pub with Jack in the days when we frequently were the only two drinking Scotch - and couldn’t get ice. ■
