David Cutler recalls Jack’s distaste for this season and the supposedly infectious but often phoney “cheer”. It was as if he’d been inoculated against this at birth. His feelings were acerbically vented in an editor’s note at the end of one December shift: “The file wound its way ineluctably toward Christmas.” I fear that Reuters will never see, and perhaps would not tolerate, his like again. ■
