Jack Hartzman

The tributes to Jack Hartzman capture his sharp wit and astonishing professionalism. He also came up with some of the most appropriate and concise formulae to convey his opinions. My favourite, which he reserved for someone who held a special place in his heart, was “an assholes’ asshole”.

It has been noted that he was much appreciated by correspondents in the field and, in my experience from decades ago, this was pretty universal. It was always reassuring to speak to him from the field, especially from difficult or dangerous places. His greatest intolerance in my experience was reserved for prima donnas. But anyone who sought his advice could be assured of the best possible counsel. He helped shape generations of good reporters with his penchant for quality, accuracy and honesty. ■
