Le Monde critique

Forgive me for being a wee bit sceptical over the Le Monde accusations of Reuters standards slipping. The source of the story is hardly unquestionable. And Reuters unbroken and unprecedented series of Pulitzers and mentions for breaking news and pictures (undreamed of in my day) would seem to rebut reports of serious slippage. Global recognition for workplace excellence, including for diversity, also have flowed in. (Just Google Reuters awards).

No doubt mistakes have been and will be made and stories lost - but that’s hardly new, or news, for any of us who still retain memory.

Like other leading news organisations Reuters struggles to remain relevant and excellent, and is doing a better job than most. For many of us it still is the first and preferred stop for comprehensive, unbiased news. And that’s saying something these days. ■
