Manfred Pagel - Uncompromising believer in Reuters values

I was saddened to learn of Manfred's death after a long period of incapacity.

Manfred was a firm and uncompromising believer in the Reuters values of truth and accuracy and was widely respected. He was also patient and kind.

I first met Manfred in Brussels, where he had been brought from Germany by David Sells, to improve his knowledge of financial journalism.

After only a few days I was transferred unexpectedly to Lisbon, and Manfred had to undertake the trainee duties which I had been performing in Brussels. Years later, when a junior journalist challenged my skills, Manfred leapt to my defence, saying that he had learnt much about financial journalism from me, and that criticising me was akin to criticising him! ■
