More memories of Cy

Cy was working for Canapress and visiting Brussels when I first met him back in the early 1970s. He gave a vivid demonstration of his somewhat eccentric, not to say histrionic, character when we drove across town from the old Reuters office in the Rue Royale to the then EEC Commission for the daily press briefing. As I remember it, Cy crouched down low on the back seat of the car, driven by bureau chief Bob Taylor, screeching “Don’t let him see me…”

Apparently, the Canapress news editor, a fierce little gentleman with a Scottish name which now escapes me, was visiting town and Cy was in mortal fear of meeting him and getting a rocket. Cy later became a friend and occasional visitor to our house in Woluwe St Lambert. When he retired back home to Toronto, he would from time to time send cuttings from the Globe and Mail with Reuters news pictures bylined by our eldest son Andrew. ■
