Nick Moore, true gentleman

Besides his great journalistic history and ability, I remember Nick Moore as a true gentleman with a wonderfully dry sense of humour. Our paths crossed from time to time over the years, and we shared the experiences of working in Asia and Africa as well as in 85 Fleet Street.

Back in London in the 1980s, we both served on a combined features and business unit under Allan Barker, the legendary “Sergeant”. Nick was appointed to head the business side, and I the features. Nick remarked that we had now reached a rank just below the Sarge - and always thereafter we greeted each other as “Corporal”.

Nick also edited a book of reminiscences by Reuter correspondents about memorable stories they had covered, titled “Frontlines: Snapshots of History”. ■
