Pizza and mozzarella

Phil Pullella and the Vatican go together like pizza and mozzarella. I covered the Vatican in the 1960s shortly after the Second Vatican Council which gave Roman Catholicism a much-needed "aggiornamento" or updating. In those days getting close to the head of the Vatican press office was quite an achievement.

Pullella managed to get close to the Pope himself. Pope Francis made him a Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Pope Pius. Someone questioned whether he should have accepted the honour. Who wouldn't? ■
