Principles and power

I see the Trustees seem to be nervous about BreakingViews, because they are so obviously opinionated and not impartial [Principles and power: an inquiry]. When I joined Reuters as a trainee in 1967, Reuters was already running opinion pieces, by Sydney Gampbell, if I remember. Pretty way out in his views, we all thought, but captivating.

In my view, if opinion is clearly signalled as such, Reuters’ own basic commitment to impartiality is not infringed. The other day, I met a young professional who said he ONLY read reuters.com for the opinion. I read those columns too. They bring value. ■
