Reuters editorial

Michael Stott’s abrupt dismissal [Abrupt departure for Reuters editor] adds to the growing list of Reuter stalwarts being dumped by the floundering news organization that not too long ago was second to none. Unfortunately, under the current regime that star has been greatly tarnished by grievous reporting errors, lapses in news judgment and, worst of all, by accusations it provided certain clients privileged information in violation of government rules on timely disclosure. The appointment of Andrew Rashbass as chief executive [Economist CEO to join Reuters as chief executive] offers hope that the company will return to the business of what it does best - fast and accurate reporting, the very foundation on which its reputation was built so many years ago. Keeping in mind that the hiring of Pulitzer Prize winners has done little or nothing to enhance the company’s credibility, thought might be given to bringing aboard journalists with strong news breaking credentials, a talent seemingly ignored by the editorial hierarchy. ■
