Reuters strengths

I don’t know if this is a wise decision from a commercial standpoint [Reuters cancels web project, to develop Reuters.com]. I don’t know if Reuters has lost some great editors in the move. But several things about Andrew Rashbass’ statement reassure me. He says Reuters needs to capitalise on some inherent strengths, which in my mind have been forgotten in recent years: its high-quality stream of real-time content, global footprint, unique visuals and local language services. This may not be a repudiation of the desire on the part of some in Thomson Reuters to ape US media organisations with far less history to their names, fewer quality journalists and less breadth. But I sure hope it is. ■
