Thomson was like an older man marrying a younger wife [Scenes from a marriage]. It liked the perceived glamour and sex appeal of a racier brand but inevitably that wasn’t enough to justify the match long term. The merger was launched on the notion that Tom Glocer and Devin Wenig would uncover the synergies that would make it worthwhile - but in a combined entity of 50,000 staff that never looked remotely likely. Big isn’t beautiful and TR has just proved it all over again. ■
