The bon vivant internationalist

Among my many fond memories of working (indirectly) for André was a visit we paid to various US senators on Capitol Hill. Upon introducing ourselves to the receptionist in Senator Phil Graham’s office, the gushing Texan behind the desk exclaimed “Oh, Mr. Vil-ay-nov, I just love the French.” A somewhat flustered André managed to stammer out that he was actually a Huguenot from England. The receptionist was rather non-plussed but the powerful Senator Graham and I were duly impressed.

Like others I was also always impressed by André’s bon vivant approach to corporate entertainment, worthy of a true Frenchman. Above all I shall recall his kindness and support in my unusual Reuters journey. ■
