The most egregious sellout yet

Julius Reuter has turned in his grave more than once over the past decade as commercial interests unrelated to news have trampled time and again on Reuters principles. The Trustees, charged with protecting those principles, have failed each time to fulfil their duty.

I have no confidence that they will show more backbone this time. The contract with the US government to help do the dirty work of the Trump administration by tracing immigrants is the most egregious sellout yet as Reuters slides into journalistic ignominy and eventual irrelevance. Shed a tear for the journalists who have held out hope that matters might take a turn for the better before their careers end. Alas, that hope looks sorely misplaced. ■
