Up to a point, Lord Copper

Allow me to disagree with Brian Mooney's plug for Boys on the Bus as a journalism book ”towering above them all," or in Evelyn Waugh's words: “Up to a point, Lord Copper.”

To my mind, and certainly in agreement with many colleagues who told me so over the years (in fact, over the decades) THE very best journalism book ever was Waugh’s Scoop (1938).

Like many other former Reuterians, I can vouch that some the most outlandish - and hilarious - events recounted in Scoop were pure factual truths which I witnessed in reality in the field on several continents. ■
