Whose debt?

Editor-in-chief Alessandra Galloni has told Reuters journalists covering the conflict in Gaza: “The world is in your debt.”

Such well-chosen words will inspire reporters and photographers working in difficult and dangerous conditions.

But I am sorry to hear that Reuters staff in Cairo, where I reported on the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, have had to call a strike because their wages are not keeping in line with economic conditions in Egypt.

For them the sad prospect seems to be: “Debt is in our world.” ■
