Abrupt departure for Reuters editor

Reuters' editor for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Michael Stott, left the company suddenly on Monday after what editorial sources said was "open disagreement".

His abrupt departure was announced by managing editor Paul Ingrassia who said he was immediately adding the role to his own responsibilities on an interim basis.

“I am writing to inform you that effective immediately Michael Stott will be leaving the company,” Ingrassia said in a note.

Stott, pictured, joined Reuters as a graduate trainee in 1986. He was appointed one of Reuters’ three regional editors in May 2011.

Ingrassia said he would be relying heavily on “the talented team” assembled by Stott over the past two years. “In particular, I’ll work very closely with our two EMEA Deputy Regional Editors, Janet McBride and Matthew Tostevin, to continue to build momentum during this interim period.”

He thanked Stott and said he had “a long and rich career at Reuters over much of the globe”. It included stints directing global top news and domestic news services as well as running bureaus in Russia, the Commonwealth of Independent States, and Turkey.

Ingrassia is a former Wall Street Journal reporter and president of Dow Jones Newswires who joined Reuters as deputy editor-in-chief two years ago and re-located to London from New York earlier this year to oversee global editorial management. ■
