Man admits killing former Reuters journalist Derek Round
Thursday 11 July 2013
A man arrested following the killing of former Reuters correspondent and manager Derek Round a year ago has pleaded guilty to murder and will be sentenced next month.
Michael Umanui Werahiko made the plea in court at Whanganui, New Zealand earlier this month. Sentencing is scheduled for 26 August.
Round, 77, pictured, was found dead in his Whanganui home on 17 May 2012. An autopsy found he had been beaten about the head, causing multiple skull fractures, and died in the evening of the day before he was found.
He was with Reuters in Singapore from 1965-1966, was manager for Singapore and Malaysia 1967-1968, and chief representative Hong Kong in 1968. For four years from 1973 he was NZPA’s Asia correspondent. In 1975 he flew to Hong Kong a fortnight before the fall of Saigon. ■
