New Reuters CEO pledges allegiance to Trust Principles

Reuters' new chief executive Andrew Rashbass started work on Thursday with a pledge of allegiance to the Trust Principles.

“The independence, integrity and freedom from bias embodied by the Trust Principles combined with Reuters famous speed, accuracy and global coverage are powerful characteristics with which to develop our already successful business,” he said in a message to staff.

“The fifth Trust Principle is ‘that no effort shall be spared to expand, develop and adapt the news and other services and products so as to maintain its leading position in the international news and information business’.

“That is an extraordinary aspiration. I know just how much effort you put in every day to make it a reality.”

Rashbass, whose job involves leading Thomson Reuters’ news and media business, said he hoped to meet everyone soon. He has organised online meetings over the next few days. “I have far too much still to learn to be in a position to make any announcements but it will be a chance for me to hear from you; to share some of my early impressions about where we have opportunities; and to answer your questions.”

Thomson Reuters chief executive James Smith, welcoming Rashbass aboard, said his track record as chief executive of The Economist Group speaks for itself. “He is committed to high standards of journalistic quality and integrity, and he has a proven ability to lead great global business teams. Under his leadership, The Economist navigated the transition into the digital era with extraordinary success and grew during a period in which many others declined.

“The addition of Andrew to our senior leadership team reflects our deep commitment to Reuters journalistic mission and critical role in the world, as well as our belief in its potential to create long-term value for our customers and shareholders.”

Smith said Reuters president and editor-in-chief Stephen Adler would continue in his role, “spearheading our editorial strategy and taking our news organization to even greater levels of success. Steve will report to Andrew, who will report directly to me.” ■
