General manager Rob Doherty leaves Reuters

The latest departure from Reuters in Washington is the biggest of them all - Rob Doherty (photo), general manager, United States and Canada with responsibility for operations in nearly two dozen bureaus.

He left the agency on Thursday - for the second time in less than four years. His departure follows that of Marilyn Thompson, Washington bureau chief.

In a note to colleagues prior to his leaving headed “Moving On, Again”, Doherty said Richard Baum, general manager, New York, would be assuming most of his duties, for the time being at least.

Doherty, first joined Reuters from United Press International in 1987. His jobs included news editor for the Middle East and Africa and deputy news editor, Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Washington bureau chief.

He left in 2008 and for nearly three years worked for a US public affairs and communications company that helped to connect non-profit organisations and foundations to policymakers and the media. He returned in 2011. ■
