Former Reuters Dublin correspondent Joe Joyce dies

Joe Joyce, who worked for Reuters in Ireland for several years from the 1970s and was highly regarded for his investigative journalism, has died in Dublin after a long illness, aged 76.

Joyce was Reuters Dublin correspondent until 1983, when the company decided to appoint a London-based journalist, after which he helped out as a local stringer.

He worked for several media , including the Irish Times, which announced his death with an obituary, calling him one of the outstanding journalists of his generation. He twice won the national journalist of the year award.

The Irish Times quoted President Michael D. Higgins as saying he was “an outstanding investigative reporter” who “showed a flair for challenging cases, putting a spotlight on injustice and helping campaigns for the undoing of damage to those wronged”.

He also wrote seven works of fiction and several non-fiction books dealing with Irish politics.

He is survived by his wife Frances, also a journalist, and three daughters. ■
