Barry May, Renaissance man

Many tributes have been paid to Barry's success in keeping the Reuter flame burning in The Baron, but a less well-known aspect of post-retirement life is his extraordinary range of roles. Besides spending chunks of every day on The Baron, he has been, to name but a few, a trustee of Reuters Pension Fund, a trustee of the Museum of Richmond, and, most demanding, chairman of The Richmond Society.

One role he is justifiably proud of is as a Freeman of the City of London, which enables him to drive a flock of sheep across London Bridge once a year, among other things. It also means that if he ever committed treason he would be entitled to be hanged with a rope made of silk rather than hemp!   ■
