Chasing Pulitzers should surely be at most something of a minor sideline for Reuters.

Even so, the prize that should have mattered most for our editors, for international reporting, went to the Associated Press. ■

Baron de Reuter retires due to ill health

Baron de Reuter, founder of Reuters, retired as managing director “in consequence of failing health” at the age of 61 in May 1878. He was succeeded by his son, Herbert, 26, born in London in 1852.
