Hacking indictment

I think this [Reuters editor indicted for helping hackers] sheds an interesting light on the policy of Reuters - and other media organizations - to encourage their staff to have “lives” online and to blog and Tweet. Of course these alleged activities were not carried out in Thomson Reuters name - but I was always quite nervous about what the journalists reporting to me were posting online. It is in practice impossible to monitor effectively. For many young journalists the material they produce in their day job is now just one of many publishing activities they are engaged in. ■
