Jack Hartzman

At the end of my shift I never had any doubt the World Desk was in highly competent hands when I passed the baton to Jolly Jack. (I could totally relax in Mrs Moon’s.) At the end of the day shift, during which filers, copytasters, chief subs, indeed every sub, plus my assistant Fred Selwyn-Smith and I, had been working flat out, Jack would “read in”, sit in the editor’s chair, organise his papers and declare: “Right! Let’s get this show on the road.” What did he imagine we had been doing for eight hours? He was stern but oh-so-skilled, and we shall never see his like again. ■
