Jack Hartzman

Ranald MacLurkin, who was then World Services Editor, came round to the World Desk one morning. He said he was going to a funeral and asked if anybody had a black tie he could borrow. We all shook our heads. But Jack quietly walked off to his locker and came back - with a black tie! Jack not only disliked Christmas but liked to be prepared for the worst. An unforgettable character. ■
