Leaning back into the future

I did news agency work for 40 years, and it seems that Reuters has evolved from a news-breaking, get-it-out first entity to a magazine-style operation that is more publisher than wire service. I mourn the passing of the former, when urgency ruled and those typos and missing commas were polished away in the first lead. So be it. I am also saddened to hear that after the slap in the face by the NLRB, Reuters has resumed its backstabbing to euthanize older and long-term newsroom hands. According to organizational theory, once the corporate identity has been achieved, individuals are objectified into positions and duties. Everyone is replaceable. Profit rules. So be it. ■
