The system under which Reuters operated during my 31 years is called the Negative-Based Reward System. Positive comments or “herograms” never make it into permanent records. After months of outstanding performance, one heard from management over a small mistake. Another factor was “the scarecrow factor” from the Wizard of Oz. Upon getting a title, the promotee thought he had a brain. PIP was a great example. It will be a difficult culture to change. ■
