Jerry Norton

Jerry ran the Singapore reporting operation when the Asia Desk moved there from Hong Kong. He was one of those quiet Americans who inspired confidence, got on with the job without fuss and got the best out of his people because he led by example. He was hugely experienced and knew a great deal more about the region than I would ever know. He didn’t seek to impose his views, but was always ready to offer useful advice if asked. A good man in a crisis, and a kind one at that: a great loss. ■
