Thomson Reuters staff unsure who was Reuters' first editor

Who was Reuters' first editor? Thomson Reuters staff are not sure.

Results of a recent poll among employees:

  • Sigmund Engländer 57.4 per cent
  • Ian Fleming 22 per cent
  • Pehr Gyllenhammar 20.6 per cent.

Engländer, pictured, was Reuters’ first editor. Born in Moravia (now part of the Czech Republic) in 1823, he met Paul Julius Reuter in Paris in 1849.

Fleming worked for Reuters for two years in the 1930s as a journalist long before becoming author of the James Bond thrillers.

Gyllenhammar is chairman of the Founders Share Company. It oversees Thomson Reuters’ adherence to the Trust Principles. ■
