Acquisition architect leaves Thomson Reuters

Geoffrey Beattie, pictured, chief architect of Thomson's $17 billion acquisition of Reuters in 2008, is retiring from the board of the merged business.

The move, disclosed by Thomson Reuters through a regulatory filing on Wednesday, comes just four months after Beattie, 52, was moved aside as president and chief executive of Woodbridge, the private holding company through which Canada’s Thomson family controls Thomson Reuters. A Thomson director since 1998, he was appointed deputy chairman of Thomson Reuters. An announcement at the time said he would focus on improving Thomson Reuters’ performance.

Wednesday’s filing also said Roger Martin, 55, dean of the Rotman School of Business at the University of Toronto, is also stepping down from the board.

David Binet, 55, the Woodbridge chief operating officer who replaced Beattie as head of the company, was appointed to the Thomson Reuters board in January. He is standing for re-election. ■
