Reuter Society launches appeal for benevolent fund

The Reuter Society on Monday launched an appeal for donations to help provide a lifeline for members who need emergency support.

“We have set up the Reuter Society Fund to make one-off financial grants towards the cost of urgent medical treatment, respite care and other short-term difficulties. It is a benevolent fund of last resort, when a member has no other source of help,” said chairman Stephen Somerville.

The Fund was established in December. Since then a number of donations from generous colleagues have been received and the Society has already made its first grant. Grants are single once-only payments for specific purposes.

The Society is now appealing for contributions both from its members and from the growing network of supporters on the Society’s LinkedIn and Facebook groups.

“Any amount, small or larger, will be welcome – and will be well used,” Somerville says.

Donations can be made by direct bank transfer to the Society’s bank, whose details are below.

The Reuter Society was founded in 1990 by a group of recently retired colleagues “to preserve and continue the comradeship developed among the Members during their work for Reuters”. It has nearly 300 members. The network of “virtual” members on LinkedIn and Facebook numbers nearly 3,000 and includes many current employees of Thomson Reuters. ■
