Reuters to hire 50 new journalists this year

After wide-scale buyouts and redundancies in 2013, Reuters is hiring again. Some 50 new positions will be recruited this year, editor-in-chief Stephen Adler (photo), said on Tuesday.

“I’m pleased to share the good news that I’ve been able to approve 50 new hires for 2014,” he said in a brief announcement to staff. “These positions, which will be filled during the course of the year, reflect the recommendations of bureau chiefs, EICs [editors-in-charge] and regional editors. The new hiring will help us fill gaps, increase our strength on some high-priority beats, and help us continue to expand our presence in key emerging markets. The roles are spread across text and visuals, and you’ll see postings for nearly all of them as they become available to be filled.”

The announcement came two weeks after Adler unveiled plans “that respond to, and anticipate, changes brought about by new technologies, new user behaviors, new competitors, and new global business realities”.

He added that the Thomson Reuters Trust Principles, which enshrine the company’s commitment to integrity, independence and freedom from bias,  also provide responsibility to “adapt the news and other services and products to maintain [our] leading position in the international news and information business”. ■
