Obituary: Roberto Landucci

Roberto Landucci (photo), a Reuters journalist in Rome, died on Saturday in a mountain climbing accident in the Italian Alps. He was 50.

Italian media reports said Landucci, an experienced mountaineer, and his climbing partner were on the 3,900-metre Cresta del Soldato on the Monte Rosa massif when he lost a crampon, slipped on ice and was strangled by a rope. His companion said he felt a violent jerk of the line but did not see the fall. The body was recovered by mountain rescue helicopter.

Born in Milan, Landucci joined Reuters in 2001. A colleague said “he was very well regarded with good sources in Rome and a clear writing style”. He had worked previously for Il Manifesto newspaper.

He leaves his wife Anna, also a journalist, and two children. ■
