Capita rejects request for extension of Experian support after pension data breach

Capita has rejected repeated requests by the Pension Review Group (PRG) and the trustees to extend for another year free Experian membership for RPF/SPS members to safeguard pensioners after a major data leak in 2023.

According to an update on the PRG website, the group was approached by a number of pensioners concerned about how much personal information could have been stolen during the data breach.

After the breach, Capita gave members 12 months free access to Experian to allow them to monitor any misuse of their data. But Capita rejected PRG's request to extend the access for a further year to ensure protection of pensioners.

It said that the initial 12 months access to Experian was in line with market standards and would help to minimise the potential impact of the cyber incident.

Capita said it had no evidence that information resulting from the cyber incident was available on the dark web, whether for sale or otherwise, and that a Capita-appointed third-party specialist adviser continued to monitor the dark web.

More details of this and other PRG actions concerning pensions for widows and partners and other issues can be found on the group's website at http://reuterspensioners.org.uk
