Belinda Goldsmith becomes editor-in-chief of the Thomson Reuters Foundation

Belinda Goldsmith, Reuters chief correspondent in Britain, is the new editor-in-chief of the Thomson Reuters Foundation's global news service. She will be responsible for managing the Foundation's global team of 27 staff journalists and an expanding network of more than 100 stringers worldwide.

Foundation chief executive Monique Villa, announcing the appointment today, said: “Belinda is an exceptional journalist with great international experience and a strong passion for news. Throughout her career, she has lead several editorial teams and shown remarkable versatility and a distinct sense for innovation. She is a tremendous addition to our fast-growing news reporting team. Her vision and talent will strengthen our coverage of the world’s under-reported stories.” The Foundation defines these as women’s rights, anti-corruption, social innovation, and the human impact of climate change.

In 2006 she was responsible for the creation and launch of the Reuters Lifestyle and Entertainment wire, and in recent years she led training courses for journalists in Lebanon, Myanmar, Jordan and Bhutan.

She said: “My respect for the work of the Foundation has developed over the years. Through the strong leadership of Monique Villa, the organisation has created a vibrant team of journalists dedicated to covering the stories mainstream media forget. I am very much looking forward to working with the Foundation’s editorial team at a time when the organisation takes on a greater role in the changing media landscape.”

Goldsmith’s predecessor as editor-in-chief was Tim Large, who was appointed the Foundation’s director of programme for the training of journalists and media professionals four weeks ago. That role was vacated by Jo Weir a month earlier. ■
